Dangling from the jib

A photo sent in from the Netherlands shows a man basket being used on the end of a long loader crane boom and jib.
Our correspondent asks “is this even legal?”

Looks handy and with the long jib the crane certainly has the right reach

The fact is that in the hierarchy of methods that could be used for this work, several safer methods trump this one. The man basket appears to depend exclusively on several links that if they faile would prove catastrophic in that the basket would drop. It does however look like a quick and convenient solution. Finally has the crane been inspected within the past six months for handling people?

A closer look at the basket

One for our Death Wish series?? Well it all looks quite well organised and calling it a Death Wish seems somewhat severe given that we do not know all the facts. So judgement reserved.
Have a safe weekend

Does this model of crane have safety valves to lock the hydraulic cylinders in the event of a hose burst? This required on personnel rated lifts, but not on material cranes.

If properly planned and supervised I don't see any problem with this. Just like when they use personal lifts to lift materials and other items.
