Crane overturn

A 250 tonne Liebherr LTM1250 All Terrain crane, belonging to UK based Ainscough Crane Hire overturned in one of the company’s yards in Scotland, on Sunday.

We understand that a technician, aided by an apprentice, was just completing a routine maintenance check, when he slewed the crane round without placing the outriggers. As soon as the boom was over the side, the crane tipped with the boom nose hitting the deck before the superstructure cab was damaged. Thankfully no one was hurt or injured in the incident.

One would think that a mechanic (technician) entrusted with working on a large, sophisticated, expensive, crane would have been told or taught, somewhere along the line, DO NOT RAISE OR SWING THE BOOM WITHOUT THE OUTRIGGERS OUT AND DOWN !

One of the 2 operators should of been present but crane companies being what they are and they all do it probably sent both ops out on other cranes or other duties, as for the previously mentioned inexperience of some operators at ach I would agree as having at times working with them as a rigging crane I wouldn't trust some (NOT ALL) to lace up my boots and on occasion feel like dragging them out of the cab and doing it myself, anyway back to the subject in hand that this would never of happened if the op had been present...end of

This a difficult and costly way for an apprentice to learn and gain skill. My curiosity wonders if a second technician or a supervisor should have been present to check the procedure(s) beforehand.

Crane lads I see your point but A lot of the fitters at Ainscoughs have more experience than the operators.

I think it should be made quite clear to our American colleagues, that no trees were harmed whilst performing this operation!

You are right about the fitters tristam. But you should have a oprater who is trained on that machine.

To be totally fair on Ainscoughs they have some of the best fitters in the game, at least nobody hurt.

Fitters fix them. opraters operate them if a crane jib is off the rest then a oprater should be in the seat its that simple.
