Two shocked in Seattle

Two men were badly burned yesterday after a small cab-down Rough Terrain crane came into contact with an overhead power line in Seattle, Washington.

One of the men is said to be critical while the other is listed as serious, they are said to be in their 30s and 40s. Both were standing underneath the crane and holding the load, when the crane’s hoist line touched the power lines, giving the two of them powerful electric shocks as the current rushed to earth.

Poor guys - I assume that there was some sort of risk assessment or lift plan in place that covered the bleeding obvious !

If the crane was working as shown, it's no wonder the operator hit power lines----his field of vision is 180 degrees from where it should have been. He couldn't see what he was doing and probably relied on signals; verbal or hand. This is the type of situation that just can't be taught in a classroom. On the job training with veteran operators for me is the only answer. My thoughts and prayers are with the two young men and their families. I wish them a speedy recovery.
