Police immediately began questioning potential witnesses, on the site – where a new West Coast elevated highway is being built. A spokesman from the Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia said: “Our initial investigations found that the crane was operating on weak soil piled on top of a monsoon drain. The crane operator appears to have overshot and gone on the soft soil covering a large ditch. The machine was on unstable ground which could have caused it to overturn. However, there is no conclusion yet but this is one of the angles being looked into.”
Three men - the site project supervisor, the person in charge of occupational safety and health, and the crane operator were taken into police custody to facilitate investigations. Klang Utara police chief assistant commissioner Mohd Yusoff Mamat said: “Three people were arrested on Saturday night in order to have their statements recorded. They were remanded for a day and will be released after their statements are recorded.”
