Fatal crane incident in Adelaide
A man died last night after he fell under an articulated crane he was working with in an Adelaide street.
The man, 35, was part of a work team involved with the overnight rerouting of a water main in the south of the city. He was a crane spotter/rigger helping the operator of the crane – a Terex Franna MRC 25 - shift concrete traffic barriers at the time, when he tripped or was caught by the crane and run over.
Questions were raised regarding lighting and fatigue – although there is no evidence whatsoever that these were factors.
Work was suspended while SafeWork South Australia investigated. Prime minister Jay Weatherill issued a statement: “In the last couple of years we have seen some very regrettable deaths in places around South Austrial. Every single one of them is a tragedy, and my thoughts are with this gentleman’s family and friends who must be suffering enormously at the moment.”
