New 16t Wolff luffer

Wolffkran has launched a new 16 tonne luffing jib tower crane - the 235B - which replaces the 224B, fitting into the lower end of the company’s luffing jib crane line slotting in between the 166B hydraulic luffer and the 275B in terms of maximum load moment.

The new crane can handle eight tonnes on a single fall thanks to a 60kW hoist with maximum line speeds of up to 130 metres a minute and a rope storage capacity of 620 metres. Two falls are required for the 16 tonnes which can be achieved at a 20 metre radius on a 30 metre jib. Jib lengths range from 30 to 60 metres, with a capacity of 1.65 tonnes at the maximum 60 metres radius. The company says that the new crane delivers its best performance with a 50 metre jib where it offers a 4.1 tonne jib tip capacity.

The 235B can reach a free standing height of 82 metres when matched with the standard two metre square UV/TV 20 tower. The minimum jib radius is 10 percent of the jib length - so six metres for the maximum jib and five for the optimum 50 metre jib.

One of the key focus points in the development programme was fast, easy installation, so the load and jib luffing winches are identical. The load hoist is mounted on the jib, so that it can be fully assembled and rigged on the ground and lifted into place in one piece – where space allows of course. The counterweight is made up of just four blocks – so just four lifts for the counterweight.

The luffing gear can be mounted either on the counter jib or the tower top during the assembly process, for greater flexibility, and the entire tower top including the pre-reeved luffing gear can be transported and lifted onto the crane as a single unit. The cab and switch cabinet can also be placed on the empty counter jib for more compact transportation.

The hoists/winches are common to several other models in the Wolff range, as are the slewing gear, the frequency converters and the eight tonne hook assembly. All intended to simplify maintenance, the training of engineers and storage.

Product manager Wouter van Loon said: “The Wolff 235B was developed in close collaboration with customers from the UK, who have decades of experience in handling luffing cranes on inner city construction sites. The result is a crane with a proven duty chart that is unrivalled when it comes to assembly and versatility.”
