Boom lift’s extra counterweight

Revenue officers discovered 88kg of heroin with a street value in the region of €12.3 million hidden in the counterweight of a boom lift at Rosslare Europort in Co Wexford, Ireland yesterday.

The find is one of the largest consignments ever intercepted in Ireland and is such a size that Revenue officials believe it was not all destined for the Irish market.

Revenue officials working with Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau were clearly tipped off on this consignment and were waiting for it on the dockside. They pulled the truck transporting the machine over as it disembarked from a ferry coming from continental Europe. The telescopic boom lift, a 70ft Haulotte H23TPX, was scanned with the Revenue’s mobile X-ray scanner, while detector dogs Sam and Flynn helped confirm the presence of the heroin stash wrapped in plastic inside the machine’s counterweight casting.

A statement from the Revenue’s press office said: “This seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the importation of illegal drugs. If businesses, or members of the public, have any information, they can contact Revenue in confidence on Confidential Phone Number 1 800 295 295.”
