Destroyed bridge replaced

German crane company Wasel has helped install a 46 tonne prefabricated temporary bridge over the River Erft in Euskirchen west of Bonn, replacing the bridge that was swept away by the severe flooding last summer.

Wasel used its 700 tonne, eight axle Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 All Terrain working with the Bielefeld branch of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) to install the 22 metre long, seven metre wide bridge. The bridge was manufactured for THW and delivered in sections, which were then assembled on site with a 50 tonne, three axle Liebherr LTM 1050-3.1.

The LTM 1650-8.1 was set up with 135 tonnes of ballast at an 8.4 metre ballast radius allowing the crane to easily lift the total 50 tonne load to a radius of 27 metres and position it on its concrete foundations. The bridge can carry vehicles weighing up to 30 tonnes

The bridge is lifted into place

Wasel technical director Julian Schmidt said: “The restoration work in the affected areas is proceeding at full speed and we are delighted that we can provide some assistance in these situations. It’s also wonderful to see how many people are doing such good work every day to get a little bit of normality back to the affected areas as quickly as possible.”

The temporary bridge is currently scheduled to remain in place for around a year until the new permanent bridge is ready to be installed.
