First Liebherr for Levantek Mexico

Mexican crane company Levantek has taken delivery of its first Liebherr crane - a 180 tonne LTM 1160-5.2 All Terrain.

The five axle LTM 1160-5.2 features a six section 62 metre main boom, plus a 10.8 to 19 metre bi-fold swingaway extension. Together with the three additional seven metre inserts between boom nose and swingaway it provides a maximum tip height of 104 metres and a maximum radius of 78 metres.

Ferdinando Paez Trevino owner of Levantek and the Olympic Group which has two other ventures, steel fabrication and transport, visited the Liebherr plant in Ehingen before finalising the purchase. He said: “The LTM 1160-5.2 significantly strengthens our crane division, as to date the fleet consisted of truck cranes with much lower lifting capacities. Our investment in a five axle mobile crane was an important strategic decision for us. We also considered purchasing a used crane. Ultimately we decided on a new LTM 1160-5.2 because it meets the requirements of our customers in terms of performance and boom length very well.”

Christian Tableros, the mobile crane manager at Liebherr México, added: “Ferdinando Paez Trevino was very interested in finding out how Liebherr builds mobile cranes. That is why we invited him to visit the plant in Ehingen.”

Paez Trevino continued: “I was very impressed with the quality in the production at Liebherr. I have had good experience with ‘Made in Germany’ products as many of my fleet of around 200 trucks come from Germany. That also made the decision in favour of Liebherr an easy one.”

Olympic set up the Levantek crane business in 2012 due, it says to the unreliable and limited service it received from the existing local crane rental firms. It is based in Nuevo León near Monterrey in North East Mexico. Until now most of its cranes have been truck mounted, boom trucks and Rough Terrains topping out at around 80 tonnes.
