Terex invests in SmartPTO

Terex has invested in Viatec, a South Carolina-based manufacturer of plug & play electronic PTO (Power Take Off) systems that enable the superstructure of a truck mounted utility platform to be operated by battery power.

Terex Utilities has worked with Viatec since 2019, and SmartPTO on a variety of its products for utility companies. The system uses a lithium NMC battery pack which can be recharged by plugging into an AC power outlet or from a fast charger. The system can be easily installed on any truck within two days.

Running the superstructure on battery power eliminates noise and carbon emissions, provides lower operating costs, and extends the life of utility equipment by reducing engine operating hours. Many utility companies have stated that eliminating most of the noise allows crews to communicate more easily with colleagues working at height, helping make the work safer.

The SmartPTO pack

Terex is the lead investor in the Series B investment, another significant investor is Duke Energy, one of Viatec’s first customers for the SmartPTO concept. As part of the investment Terex will appoint a representative to Viatec's five-man board of directors.

Terex chief executive John Garrison said: "Viatec has developed an electrification solution for utility customers that is highly effective and easy to use. Our investment in Viatec will enable the company to scale production and make its offering more widely available to electric utility and other customers."

Viatec chief executive Mark Ferri added: "We are excited to take our company capabilities to the next level. We look forward to our continued partnership with Terex and appreciate the company's investment."
