Man missing after crane incident

A man is missing and feared drowned after a crane collapse at the Keppel Shipyard in Singapore on Monday. Four others were injured.

The rail mounted dockside crane was working from a concrete pier running alongside the Prosperity FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) vessel, the hull of which has been in the yard since April for the installation of its topside modules prior to deployment on ExxonMobil’s Payara offshore field in Guyana.

Halfway through Monday morning the pier under the crane collapsed, causing the crane to tilt suddenly onto the rig, with the dynamic impact of the collision buckling the boom which broke over the vessel.

The missing man, 38, an employee of Kumarann Marine, was on the pier at the time along with a colleague, 40, who was rescued. He and another man aged 31, were taken to hospital while two other men, 29 and 48, were treated on site for minor injuries.

In a statement, Keppel Shipyard said: “We can confirm that an incident occurred yesterday at Keppel Shipyard in Tuas where a section of the quayside gave way causing two workers to fall into the sea and a crane to tilt to the side. We have rescued one of the workers who is in stable condition, while the other worker is currently missing. Keppel Shipyard values the life and safety of every worker and is working closely with the authorities to conduct thorough investigations. As investigations are ongoing, we are unable to provide further details at this juncture."

The first topside module was installed on the Prosperity for owner/operator SBM Offshore in April, by the 5,000 tonne capacity Asian Hercules II floating sheerleg crane. A video of the installation can be seen below.
