Liebherr to Lewis

The only crane rental company on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland has taken delivery of a 60 tonne Liebherr LTM1060-3.1 - its first Liebherr.

John Maciver & Son carries out a wide range of work on the island from construction site to ship loading. The three axle crane features a six section, 48 metre main boom topped by a 9.5 to 16 metre bi-fold swingaway extension for a maximum tip height of 67.5 metres. It can also travel in the UK with its full 12.8 tonnes of counterweight and the extension on board. The new crane features ECOmode and ECOdrive systems for improved fuel consumption and VarioBase outrigger set up.

Managing director Iain Maciver said: “Being so far from the mainland, we need a manufacturer who can provide reliable support, even in remote locations.”

The company was established in 1960 by John Maciver who had set up a host of different business following his return from the USA in 1929, including a bus service, transport, a fishmongers and fish and chip shops and a fish smoking operation. In 1961, having set up the company, Maciver retired handing the business over to his two sons - Calum Dan and George, and his son in law Kenneth. The company acquired its first crane in 1978 and today provides crane and equipment rental across the Western Isles with a fleet that includes All Terrains from 35 to 100 tonnes, loader cranes and a Maeda LC785 mini crawler crane.
In 2009 a general rental business was added - Hebridean Plant Hire - which offers evertyhing from mini excavators to aerial lifts, scaffold towers and telehandlers.

Lewis is the largest island in the Western Islands, covering 683 square miles (1,770 km2) with a population of 18,500.
