German rental company Gerken has taken delivery of its All Terrain crane after having announced its move into crane rental earlier this year.
The crane, a 70 tonne four axleTadano AC 4.070L-1 features a six section 52.1 metre main boom plus a nine to 16 metre bifold swingaway extension with up to 40 degrees of offset. Maximum tip height is 70 metres. can handle 62.5 tonnes at a three metre radius and 27.8 tonnes at an eight metre radius or 5.8 tonnes on full boom, at up to 18 metres radius. Klug ordered the AC 4.070L-1 with the full 16.5 tonnes of counterweight, 12.2 tonnes of which can be carried on board within 12 tonne axles loadings. While all of the counterweight can be caried where 16.5 tonne axle loads are permitted.

The company already runs a number of spider and mini crawler cranes alongside the aerial lifts and telehandlers in its fleet and has a number of Böcker truck and trailer mounted cranes on order. The Tadano is the company’s first step in adding larger models. The new crane rental division is based in Dusseldorf, and will be managed by Christian Gerken, Markus Liffers and Manfred Drößer.
The Gerken rental business was established in 1989, but the company can trace its roots back to 1963 when Manfred Gerken opened a painting business in Düsseldorf. Having become a significant user of aerial lifts on larger painting contracts, he found himself gradually moving into rental, and set up the rental company Gerken Arbeitsbühnenvermietung in 1989.

Telehandlers were added in 2014 and more recently the company has purchased spider cranes. The Gerken fleet is now made up of more than 9,000 aerial work platforms and operates from 37 locations, including one in the Netherlands.
