We have received the sad news that Texas rental industry veteran Don O’Neal has died.
O’Neal who owned and managed A-1 Rentals, managed Nations Rent for a few years and set up Rental One, passed away on Friday, January 3rd - he was 75.
O’Neal grew up in the rental industry, working with his father’s business - Colleyville based A-1 Rentals, located on the Fort Worth side of the Dallas Fort Worth Airport. He joined the company full time in the early 1960s, after graduating from college and over the next decade or two they built the company into a leading player in the Dallas Fort Worth equipment rental market.
The O’Neals sold A-1 to NationsRent in October of 1998, with O’Neal becoming president of the Nations Rent - a relatively new consolidator, until it filed for Chapter 11 protection at the end of 2001. The company recovered and was acquired by Ashtead in 2008.
In late 2003 O’Neal acquired a nine acre plot in Colleyville and established a new company Rental One, along with his son Mike and other family members. They sold that business in December 2022 to Texas First Rentals of San Antonio, a division of Cat dealer Holt
O’Neal is survived by his wife Elizabeth, son, Mike and daughter Tiffany Alvarez, along with five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Cross City Church in Euless, Texas on Saturday, January 11th at 14:00. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cross City Church, in Euless or MD Anderson Cancer Center. The family has also said that blood donations extended O’Neal’s life and suggests people consider becoming blood donors.
