Over the road Death Wish

Cordoning off, road closures and avoiding working over traffic are all important when working on the public highway.

A reader in the UK spotted a crew with all the safety equipment on working over an open road. Death Wish?

Working over the road

In his own words “Here we have the boom of doom! no road closure, its not even coned off but there are two banksmen standing talking allowing the traffic to drive underneath the men working above. This was taken in Blyth Northumberland, surely they must have a death wish?

Traffic passing below

We think he is right, the lift could easily be struck by a passing truck, at least it looks as though the workmen are wearing proper harnesses. If the ground gave away and the truck tipped it could come down on a passing car or the men in the platform could drop one of their tools onto a passer by.
