Scissor nest
Service engineers at the Coalville, Leicestershire, depot of UK based Star Platforms have discovered a pair of robins nesting in one of their 50ft Skyjack 9250 RT scissor lifts.
The pair have hatched three young chicks so the Star Platforms team is watching them grow, while they wait for them to move on. Service manager Andy Denston spotted the birds nesting in the machinery chest of the diesel powered scissor lift a few weeks ago, nestled against the electrics, and cordoned off the area, until the birds vacate the machine.

“We were able to provide a little peace and quiet for our feathered friends, despite the comings and goings in a busy powered access hire depot. We were delighted to see that there were eggs in the nest, and then that they hatched, he said.”

Managing director Steve Simmons added: “As well as keeping track of customer needs, sales figures and operational matters, we now have a Springwatch-style update at every morning meeting. Many of the team are animal lovers, so we have been keen to protect the robins and give them space to raise their family. In a week or two, we hope all three chicks will be giving us a demonstration of what working at height in the natural world is all about when they fly the nest.”
Have a great weekend and if you are visiting Vertikal Days bring some decent weather with you.

I have jackdaws nesting in the top of the tower of my self erecting crane, again. The chicks squeak for food with every crane movement. Getting pictures is a bit difficult due to them being 19 metres up.

One joy of working at height and outdoors is to observe Nature at work. This story will provide pleasure to the six children in my ground man's family.
