New tree removal guide
Safe Work Australia has published guide to tree trimming and removal entitled ‘ Managing risks of tree removal’.
The 44 page guide principally concentrates on the safe working practices for tree removal with a substantial section on the safe use of aerial work platforms for tree work, recommending the use of a boom type – trailer, truck or self-propelled – lift above all others.
It as very useful guide but sadly while it does address the removal of trees in sections, does not tackle the issue of the safe use of cranes for this type of work. The guide can be downloaded free of charge from

Vertikal Comment
Arborists are a big user of cranes, aerial lifts and telehandlers, and the sector experiences a far higher incidence of accidents and fatalities than most other applications. Guides such as this can only help raise awareness and hopefully reduce the level of injuries and deaths.

Every day we work trees the day begins with four segments; prayer, safety meeting, job briefing and Electrical hazards assessment plan (if applicable). This standard of operations is based on the old saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
