When a New York state arborist became stranded in his trailer mounted platform this week, two local fire departments turned out to rescue him.
The incident occurred in the Wallkill area, north west of New York city, it was early evening, and the man was working from the platform of a Haulotte/Bil-Jax 4527A trailer lift at a height of around 14 metres or so.
He was well equipped and well set up and seemingly doing all the right things – until somehow a large tree limb was drop onto the machine below and, according to the Plattekill Fire Department, landed on the lower controls, damaging the hydraulics and causing the machine to cut out.
It was Monday evening and the team from all volunteer Plattekill Fire Department, was on a training drill at the time when the call came in and was therefore able to respond in force rapidly. Once on the scene they assessed the situation and called on nearby Cronomer Valley Fire Department in Newburgh to bring its 33 metre Spartan ERV 110’ Quint rescue ladder to the scene, in order to reach the stranded man.
Although an ambulance arrived along with the first responders – the man was unhurt, and the trailer lift was later recovered.

If only there was an operators manual that showed how to lower the machine manually.
It would have been so much quicker and easier, just read the manual !
