Whoops!
A large mobile crane lost stability and tipped over the rear in the UK yesterday.
The incident occurred at the Mammoet UK yard in Stockton yesterday when a large Liebherr All Terrain tipped over the rear, apparently while the boom was being extended at a low angle in order for the internal sections to be greased.

With the boom at a low angle it landed on the boom nose, preventing it tipping further, we understand that no one was hurt in the incident, apart perhaps for the operator's pride.

The crane has now been lifted back on its feet and is being assessed. While the boom looks OK in the photographs, it is not of course designed to take loads or impact stresses in that direction, and may well require serious remedial work, or at the very least a full and detailed inspection.

As to the cause? Insufficient counterweight for this manoeuvre? Incorrect boom sequencing? The first two sections were extended at the time and the Y-Guy frames were in place on the base section, it also looks as if just the base section of counterweight, was in place at the time.

Well, I am a tower crane guy, but the truck cranes seem to have a tendency to tip over to the rear. So my guess is that extending such a heavy boom at the low angle without attaching counterweights, should at least be performed to the side, where the tipping edge seems to be more forgigiving (the support points being farther form the slewing axis?...)
