St Petersburg Death Wish

Sent to us by one of our Russian readers we believe that the following photographs show classic examples of some of the worst working at height practices from his home city of St Petersburg – although he has yet to confirm this.

The crane was putting a restored art Deco spire / decoration back onto a building in the centre of town – we think this is one of the buildings on the Moika Canal? If so it must be at least 20 metres up.

Working at height the St Petersburg way

The scaffolding around it is as basic as it comes, but worse than that are the platforms – a few stray unsecured planks. The two men are installing and then uncoupling the crane, a slight wrong movement by them of the crane operator who does not have a great view and they’re gone! A definte Death Wish.

This is on the top of a multi-storey building in the centre of town

Russia has some strict rules covering safe work practices although this sort of thing is all too common.
