A new telehandler company

We do not normally cover agricultural shows here, but at last week’s EIMIE agricultural show in Bologna there were several exhibits that caught the eye.

First and foremost was a stand for a new company Magni Telescopic handlers, owned by Riccardo Magni, previously chief executive of Manitou’s Italian subsidiary MCI.

The new company has a facility in Castelfranco Emilia, close to Manitou Italia, While the company name is Magni Telehandlers, the full launch of the new company’s product range is not expected until Bauma next April.

In the meantime the company displayed an unusual aerial work platform for picking dates, dubbed the Ricki Lift 18, with an open throated platform with an unusual section that swings into place on the other side of the tree trunk to create all around access.

Magni Telescopic handlers' Rickilift

No one was on hand to explain the telescopic boomed lift with its extending axles and four wheel drive, or to provide a specification sheet. So one has to assume that the unit has an 18 metre working height?

Moving on to a couple of prize winning exhibits – Weidemann showed its T4512 cc40, a new baby machine weighs just 2,572kg, but includes plenty of full-size features. It was its load-control system – Driver Assistance System – however that caught the judges’ eye. It is designed to make the absolute best of the relatively limited 1,200kg lift capacity and prevents any inadvertent forward overloading by automatically retracting the boom as it is lowered.

Weidemann showed its new T4512 mini telehandler

The other award winner was Merlo’s new Turbofarmer P50.8 CS, five tonne capacity eight metre lift height telehandler- a new class for Merlo. Not expected to be in production until the middle of 2013, the P50.8 CS features a standard cab suspension beneath a brand-new cab design. The same full-width as before, but with a new curved windscreen and a fully restyled interior.

Also standard will be Merlo’s CDC – dynamic load control – system, EcoPowerDrive and a new CVTronic transmission. The new transmission is claimed to have a 50 km/h travel speed potential and further reduced fuel consumption. Unusually for a agricultural telehandler, the P50.8 CS has the possibility of an optional mechanical 540/1000 rpm PTO.

The interior of Merlo's new cab

Finally Dieci displayed an interesting new series of pivot-steer articulated material handlers. Three prototypes were on show – ranging from 4.3 metre pin height to five metres. The smallest has a 36.5kW Kubota with the others sharing a Yanmar motor at 50 or 55 kW.
