OSHA to delay crane rule

OSHA has announced that it is considering extending the compliance date for the crane operator certification by three years to Nov. 10, 2017, following recent hearings that garnered industry input.

The main purpose of the delay is to take into consideration industry concerns of qualification/certification requirements and capacity bands and make any required changes prior to the final deadline for full implementation of the new rule..

Vertikal Comment

This is something of a surprise although given the huge concerns over the difference between certification and being qualified to operate a specific crane. Keeping to the November 2014 date was increasingly threatening to become almost unenforceable.

The delay will also help training and certification companies add capacity and smooth the transition. All in all this looks like a sensible move, however those who have taken the necessary steps to comply fully prior to next year’s deadline will probably not be too pleased.
