20 Link-Belts for Houston beltway

A contractor building part of Houston’s Grand Parkway has ordered 20 new Link-Belt cranes for the project.

The billion dollar contract for a 38 mile section was awarded to Zachry-Odebrecht Parkway Builders - a joint venture between Zachry Construction of San Antonio, Texas and Odebrecht Organization of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil – with a 30 month build schedule. The Texas Department of Transportation is building the 184 mile third beltway loop for the greater Houston, area in Harris and Montgomery Counties.

Zachry-Odebrecht purchased six 60 tonne RTC-8065 Series II Rough Terrain cranes, eight 80 tonne RTC-8080 Series II Rough Terrains, and six 70 tonne TCC-750 telescopic crawler cranes. The cranes will be used at storage yards for assembly, loading and unloading sub-structure bridge forms, and operating at some of the 120 bridges and over-passes on the 38 mile route.

The cranes working in the sub-structure construction are scheduled to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Link-Belt dealer Holt Crane & Equipment will continue to support the contractor throughout the job.

During the peak of operation Zachry-Odebrecht will have around 1,500 employees working on the project in order to meet the schedule.

Teddie Forman, project equipment manager for Zachry-Odebrecht, said: “When conditions for access are not favourable, mobility for the TCC-750 is excellent. So far the production crews and general superintendents have been very happy with those machines. They fit our needs very well in the conditions they work in.”
