Two Groves for Ellis

UK based rental company Ellis Crane Hire took delivery of the UK's first 60 tonne Grove GMK3060 at the end of 2014 and has since taken delivery of an 80 tonne GMK4080-1 All Terrain crane.

The GMK3060 has a 43 metre six section main boom and a 8.7 to 15 metre bi-fold swingaway extension. Features include the company's new Crane Control System (CCS) which is directly linked to Manitowoc Crane Care service software and the new Boom Configuration Mode which automatically selects the optimal boom configuration for a lift once the operator has entered the basic parameters. The crane went straight to work lifting a four tonne purpose-built special needs pod into the back of a home extension in Gloucester.

The GMK4080-1 has a 51 metre main boom and is able to carry all of its 19.3 tonne ballast on board within the UK's STGO rules, which allow up to 16.5 tonne axle loadings.

Ellis Crane Hire’s owner Simon Ellis, said: “Demand for three-axle cranes has steadily increased over the last 10 years, so capturing a greater portion of this key market was never a doubt for us in our decision to expand. We studied similar machines from other manufacturers, but concluded that as our existing GMK3055 had proven to be such a strong and reliable crane, it was the right decision to add another three-axle All Terrain Grove crane to our growing fleet.”

“When I started in the crane hire business 30 years ago, an 80 tonne crane seemed colossal, the Grove crane offering in this capacity was over three metres longer than the current GMK4080-1. Thanks to developments in crane technology we are now able to offer more compact machines in our fleet, not just with longer booms but with innovative steering and suspension capabilities as well.”
