New Grove for Brendon Penn
Brendon Penn Crane Hire, of Western Australia, has replaced a 13 year old 100 tonne Grove GMK5100 All Terrain crane with a new five axle 110 tonne Grove GMK5110-1.
The old crane had clocked up over 280,000 km of road travel, covering what is a massive territory.
The company purchased the GMK5100 in 2001 to support its work for clients in the nickel and gold mining industries in the Kalgoorlie region of Western Australia. It was configured with a tow hitch and a trailer, carrying 20 tonnes of counterweight, enabling it to operate as a self-contained rig.
In one project, servicing telecommunications towers in the outback, it travelled half the width of Australia in a single trip and returning to base ready for the next job. The original crane was purchased in 2001 from regional dealer, WATM Crane Sales, which has also serviced it over the past 13 years. It has also supplied the replacement.

The new unit features a 51 metre main boom, with Twin-Lock pinning system 40.1 tonnes of counterweight, aluminium wheels with 20.5 tires, a driveline retarder and the new Grove carrier cab. The company also owns a 220 tonne Grove GMK6220, and a 90 tonne Grove TMS9000E truck-mount.
Company owner Brendon Penn said: “The Grove GMK5100 was a great asset to our company and our customers were always pleased with its performance. So, when it came time to upgrade our fleet, it made perfect sense to choose the GMK5110-1 crane as a replacement. Plus it offers the best lifting capacity in its class and its main boom length suits the lifting requirements of our customers in the Kalgoorlie region.”
