400 tonner for Elcon

South African rental company Elcon Crane Hire has taken delivery of a 400 tonne Liebherr LTM 1400-7.1 All Terrain crane.

The new seven axle crane is a big leap forward in terms of capacity, with the company’s previous ‘flagship’ a 250 tonne LTM 1250-6.1 - already the largest mobile crane in the Durban area where the company is based. The new crane insures that it has the largest in the region. Elcon ordered the new crane complete with an 84 metre luffing jib which allows hook heights of up to 128 metres.

Elcon says that it looked at a number of different cranes when buying the LTM1400, but decided on the Liebherr due to a number of product features and benefits and its long term good partnership with the manufacturer. The Liebherr can install its own boom guying system, and only requires an auxiliary crane if the fixed or luffing jibs have to be installed.

The new crane will primarily be used in KwaZulu Natal Province mostly serving the port areas in Durban and Richards Bay, the two oil refineries in the province and some of the large mines in the region.

Elcon Crane Hire employs 60 and runs a fleet of 38 mobile cranes with capacities from seven to 400 tonnes. A large proportion of them being Liebherr.

Since 2012 the company has been a member of the Concord Cranes group which gives it access to a further 120 cranes with capacities of up to 550 tonnes based at 13 branches throughout South Africa and Namibia. The group also owns Anglo V3 Crane Hire, Castle Crane Hire and Concord Namibia.
