The Savannah Project
Lavendon has teamed up with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) to launch its charity initiative dubbed The Savannah Project.
To mark the occasion the company held a charity event at its head office in Lutterworth, UK, yesterday, which featured the unveiling of a uniquely painted boom lift and a live performance from African music and dance group ACD Arts.
Lavendon’s financial controller Adam Rochelle, said: “We wanted this project to touch as many of our own staff and associates as possible. So rather than simply taking a new machine and painting it, we formed a multidisciplinary team to undertake a more ambitious route.”

The unveiling of Nationwide Platforms' special boom lift 'Yazz'
With support and donated components from Genie, Pirtek and Platinum Batteries totalling around £10,000, two teams of four apprentices from Nationwide Platforms set about refurbishing two Genie boom lifts scheduled for disposal. The winning boom lift was then sent for sandblasting and priming, before local artist Peter Barber painted it with distinctive giraffe markings. In addition to sponsor and supplier staff, more than 70 Lavendon employees were involved in the project, with the majority of work being completed outside of normal working hours.

Over the next two years all rental proceeds from the boom lift, named Yazz (a reference to something way before my time...), will be donated to ZSL, after which the conservation charity will take delivery of the boom lift to be used for the maintenance of ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.
