Fifth Terex 3800 for Steil
German crane rental company Steil Kranarbeiten has taken delivery of another 650 tonne Terex Superlift 3800 lattice boom crawler crane – its fifth in three years.
The 650 tonne Superlift 3800, which can handle its maximum capacity at a radius of five to 12 metres, was handed over at the Terex facility in Zweibrücken before heading out for its first job, lifting a concrete bridge in the very same town.
Configured with a 42 metre main boom, 253 tonnes of counterweight and 50 tonnes of central ballast, the new crane lifted a 78 tonne concrete bridge spanning the river Schwarzbach. A trial run was conducted the previous day to determine its weight – which turned out to be four tonnes heavier than the information supplied.
René Perlich, head of the Stiel’s large crane division, said: “We made core drill holes through the bridge and threaded hoist cables through them as we couldn’t determine the bridge’s exact weight in advance, so there was basically no way we’d be able to balance it perfectly. The access road to the bridge was also particularly challenging. It was like going through the eye of a needle. We had to plan everything down to the very last detail and figure out when each component had to be delivered to the work site.”
