Spider Jockey

Spotted by a reader in Australia a rental company taking a narrow spider lift through a gateway in a very cavalier way.

While the job is a fantastic example of what can be achieved with this type of spider lift, the way in which the operator carries it out is fraught with danger. Oblivious to this he was proud enough to post it online.

We assume that the painting client, which he names was unaware of this methodology and so have crossed his name off the report.

In the words of our correspondent: “I came across this picture and description on the internet, what worried me most was that they were happy to post it for the world to see, as it seems they feel proud that they 'did a good job'”

“It would appear the operator is 'riding' the boom as he negotiates it through the gate. Also note the loose lead and the other materials in the alleyway that should have been removed. Maybe someone could offer him a training course so that he does not injure himself or others in the future”.

Riding the spider

“The person posting the picture, who has a business in Melbourne Australia said this in his comment: “Difficult Access Job of this week was this one for Xj Hxxxxx painting. We got the 18m Zeus into the backyard with only about 2mm spare. It then had to go up a small set of stairs and around a pool”.

Definitely one for our Death Wish Series

My lift work in tree service began in 2001 with a Work Force telescoping 40' trailer lift. In 2008 I acquired my 2003 Niftylift TM40 trailer lift. Thanks to a Hidden Hitch that is mounted to the frame of my GMC Sierra work truck the lift can be maneuvered through tight spaces and around yard art. TodayI booked a three-tree pruning job that will take two hours to make two sets for about one hour of tree work. So I can appreciate the tight corners this chap is taking his spider lift through. Common sense come from common knowledge. The mind of a strategist operates on three R's: reality, resources and the ripeness of both for plucking into use.
