Five guilty of Mecca crane disaster

The Jeddah Bureau of Investigations and Public Prosecution has found five senior technical and engineering officials guilty of involvement in the failures leading to the incident in which a 1,350 tonne crawler overturned onto the Grand Mosque on September 11, killing 111 people and injuring 394.

The Arabic daily newspaper Al-Watan quoted a reliable source, but did not name the five accused, but said the preliminary information indicated that they will be charged.

The engineers and technicians were involved in the supervision of the project to expand the Grand Mosque and included government officials. It is understood that Bureau began its investigation two months ago with suspects from the Binladin company and found conclusive evidence of their involvement in the tragic incident. The company’s executives have been barred from leaving the Kingdom until any legal action against the company has been completed. It has also been excluded from bidding for new public projects.

The Jeddah Bureau will forward the results of its investigations to its headquarters in Riyadh which will compile the list of charges.
