New lightweight crane

UK crane manufacturer Penny Hydraulics and Mackworth Vehicle Conversion Specialists have jointly developed a special lightweight loader crane for highways maintenance work.

The new crane -MC250/1 - has been designed following a request from Penny customer Eurovia a leading operator in the highway and local authority services market. It wanted a crane that could lift 100kg wacker plates and other supplies on and off its 7.2 to 12 tonne trucks, without the weight and space and operational issues involved with larger cranes.

The MC250/1, which has a maximum capacity of 250kg, was designed to be mounted by a special corner bracket directly to the truck’s headboard end post, but folds away to take up little to no space when not in use. It incorporates a high speed hoist, an easy to use wander lead remote control, a simple built in overload device, is easily demountable and can be powered via the vehicle’s 12 or 24 volt battery.

The Penny Eurovia corner crane

Penny Hydraulics focused the design on removing weight without sacrificing performance or durability. The end result is a crane that weighs just 20kg. Penny has installed an initial 20 cranes, which are now out and working across the UK. Based on their performance Eurovia is now planning to install a further 30 cranes over the coming months.

Mackworth general manager Andy Kent said: “The new crane design really ticks all the boxes. It’s compact and easy to use. We expect Eurovia to see an increase in both productivity and operator safety as the cranes go into operation. Installation is easy, we are able to either bolt or weld the corner bracket directly onto the headboard and the crane just hangs off the bracket.”
