First big Crawler for Egger

Swiss transport and heavy haulage contractor Emil Egger has taken delivery of a 1,000 tonne Liebherr LR 11000 crawler crane.

The crane, which Liebherr claims is the largest in Switzerland went straight to work in Zurich installing reinforced concrete supports weighing between 25 and 58 tonnes. The crane is set up on a prepared deep piled base and will work from that single location placing the supports over a wide radius. The later façade components weigh up to 90 tonnes. The crane will be on site for around six months. After that it is expected to work on a number of wind turbine erection jobs around Europe. It is Emil Egger's first crawler crane - up until now the company's fleet fully consisted entirely of All Terrain cranes, industrial cranes and truck cranes.

The crane is equipped with the Liebherr suspended VarioTray ballast system. Once the boom is up and the full counterweight is not required it can drop off the 160 tonne centre section for use elsewhere.

The VarioTray ballast

Director Michael Egger said: "The flexible options of the VarioTray entail cost benefits and save a huge amount of time for the otherwise tedious ballast installation and removal. The substrate is so poor here that we had to drive piles more than 40 metres into the ground where the crane was to be set up for static reasons. In our opinion, Liebherr offers the most modern unit with the greatest application variability in this load class – plus good service".

Founded in St. Gallen in north east Switzerland in 1931, Emil Egger has nine sites throughout the country with around 450 employees. The new Liebherr crawler crane joins a fleet of around 30 cranes.
