UK's first 250t Kobelco

UK rental company Hawks Crane Hire has taken delivery of the UK’s first 250 tonne Kobelco CKE2500G-2 crawler crane.

The crane has a maximum boom length of 91.4 metres and can lift its maximum capacity at 4.6 metres. Its first job involved helping deliver a community energy project – The Sandford Lock Hydro scheme – at the Lasher Weir on the River Thames near Oxford, working alongside a 90 tonne Kobelco CKE900G-2. The CKE2500G-2 is also equipped with Kobelco’s KCross remote operation management system, which helps to maximise machine efficiency and uptime.

Managing director Elliot Hawkins said: “Access to the site was a real problem. Not only when it came to moving the Archimedes screws, but also, thanks to a very low bridge, getting the cranes on site too. We looked at several options and the low profiles and compact dimensions of the Kobelco CKE2500G-2 was the only crane that would fit under the bridge.”

“We’re really pleased with the handling of the CKE2500G-2 in both configurations. The machine is easy to operate, doesn’t break down and, thanks to the new Stage IV/Tier 4 Final engine, complies with emission requirements in central London.”

The crane has been sent to work on the Sandford Lock Hydro scheme

Kobelco sales manager Mark Evans said: “Machines fitted with the KCross system transmit working conditions, location and maintenance history to provide owners with fact-based information that gives tremendous advantages for their asset management. The KCross system is based on satellite mapped images, an internet connection and other means to remotely monitor a crane’s working condition and its location. This information is useful in planning maintenance schedules and providing guidance to operators, helping to ensure that crane owners can maximise their fleet efficiency.”
