The Palace of Las Garzas is located in the old quarter of Panama City and was built after the original town was completely destroyed by pirate Henry Morgan in 1671. It was completed in 1673 and has been used as the home of the Spanish governor, a royal winery, warehouse, and as both customs and National Bank's headquarters.
The building first become a presidential home in 1885 and was extensively renovated and extended – including the addition of a third floor and two towers - between 1922 and 1923. An elevator was added in 1934 for a state visit by US president Franklin Delano Roosevelt who stayed in the building.
