Dual load chancer
Received from an American reader, an example of a platform being used as a crane – and a platform at the same time.
We have no idea where it occurred, or when for that matter, but it is a classic example of what not to do with an articulated boom lift. The operator is controlling the machine, a Genie Z-45 - from the platform, and has a substantial looking load slung from the end of articulating jib – just before the platform connection/rotator.

An operator oblivious to the dangers of lifting loads with platforms
The lift is almost certainly overloaded and even if by chance the load is large but extraordinarily light, it presents a large ‘sail area’ that could cause the machine to overturn from the dynamic effect of the swinging load, should any gusts of wind spring up. The operator is clearly oblivious to the dangers, given that he is operating from the basket rather than using the ground controls.
Definitely one for our Death Wish Series.

The photo may have been submitted by an American reader, but the building is at Greenwich, East London, immediately adjacent to the Blackwall Tunnel. Even if the machine was rented 'self drive' (which would be usual in the UK), site management would have prepared a method statement and risk assessment for this activity and I doubt any H&S advisor would be happy using the machine outside of its designed purpose.
