Felbermayr acquires SGL

Austrian crane and aerial lift rental group Felbermayr has acquired German rental company SGL.

SGL is based in Giesen, north of Hildesheim with a branch in Goslar and is also a member of the Partnerlift association of independent rental companies. It runs a fleet that includes scissor lifts and booms, truck mounted platforms and telehandlers, while offering a range of other products including spider cranes from other Partnerlift members. It employs eight staff and covers the greater Hanover region. Details of the transaction have not been disclosed.

The acquisition of SGL is concluded

SGL was founded in 2014 by managing director Tim Werner Schönherr who will remain with the company as branch manager. He said: “I am very happy with this development which will see us continue to trade as SGL, but as part of the Felbermayr Group. We can now respond to customer requirements even better and more flexibly. We also hope to remain a member of the Partnerlift rental organisation.”

Felbermayr Access rental division manager Stephan Kulawik, who joined the company earlier this year, (See:Kulawik joins Felbermayr) added: "This gives us an ideal basis for providing our range of services in the metropolitan region of Hanover, including the traditional industrial sites in the Harz region. We will continue SGL's very successful course with the support of the Felbermayr Group.”

Partnerlift managing director Kai Schliephake said: We will jointly evaluate the future possibilities of cooperation between the Felbermayr group and Partnerlift in the coming months."

Vertikal Comment

As we anticipated when Stephan Kulawik was appointed by Felbermayr to “expand its access division strongly” in Germany, the acquisitions have started. Either this one was already in the pipeline or Kulawik moves very fast.

One advantage with this deal is that the SGL livery looks extremely close to the Felbermayr colours, so one less job to be done. The strategy appears to be to retain the local trading names while providing the product range and support of a major international group.

This deal looks like a very positive first step and gives the Felbermayr access division five locations in northern Germany with the original Bautzen and Dresden, plus the addition of Krefeld HQ and now the SGL Hanover locations. Watch out for further announcements in the months ahead.
