Neoenergia is owned by Spanish group Iberdrola, was created in 1961 as Coelba (Companhia de Eletricidade do Estado da Bahia) and Cosern (Companhia Energética do Rio Grande do Norte), and controlled by the State Governments until 1997, when they were privatised and purchased with 30 year concessions by the current owners and merged to create Neoenergia.
Further purchases are planned for later this year.
