Oshkosh acquires Maximetal
JLG owner Oshkosh has acquired Canadian fire and utility vehicle manufacturer Maxi-Métal.
Based in Saint-Georges de Beauce, south of Quebec City, Quebec, Maxi-Métal was founded by Claude Gendron in 1983 to build customised vehicles and apparatus for firefighting and emergency applications. When Gendron passed away in 2009 his family sold the business to three new owners, including Danny Dufour, who became sole proprietor in 2016.

With the new owners on board, the business was expanded to other Canadian provinces and some units were exported. Then in 2015 it signed an agreement with Oshkosh company Pierce Manufacturing to build the Pierce Saber chassis for the Canadian market, complete with Maxi-metal pumping equipment and custom bodywork. After deliveries began in 2016 the two partners agreed a second deal in which Maxi-metal supplied fire pumps and tankers on a commercial chassis for sale through the Pierce network in the USA.
Jim Johnson, executive vice president of Oshkosh Fire & Emergency said: “This acquisition will enhance the combined strengths of Pierce and Maximetal by broadening collaboration and expanding sales and distribution capabilities within Pierce’s North American dealer network. Oshkosh expects to benefit from Maximetal’s experience and leadership as the company grows its combined presence in the Canadian market.”
