650t crawler for Brazil

Mammoet Brazil has taken delivery of a 650 tonne Tadano CC 38.650 crawler crane for onshore wind turbine installation.

The new crane will be used specifically to erect the latest generation of towers being installed in Brazil, which increasingly use concrete tower sections poured on site which can be two to three times heavier than their steel counterparts. The CC 38.650 will be used with boom lengths ranging from 105 to 129 metres at which it can handle up to 255 tonnes - more than sufficient to lift the concrete sections and track them across the hardstanding to their final installation positions.

The new crane has already arrived and started work on its first job site - the Cajuina Wind Farm in Angicos region, Rio Grande do Norte, 100km west of Natal - where 55 wind turbines are to be installed with a total capacity of 314 Megawatts.

The Brazilian government has been investing in wind power generation throughout the country. At the start of the year wind energy supplied around 11 percent of the country’s energy its third most common source. Overall, the country is the biggest wind energy producer across Latin America.
