Fatal spider lift incident

A woman was killed on Monday, February 13th, when a spider lift overturned and landed on her at a shopping centre in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Two men, one 19 and one 45, were using the platform to clean the façade of the building and were apparently working at a height of around 20 metres when it lost stability and went over, they were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The woman who was in a wheelchair just outside the entrance to the mall was trapped under the overturned machine. By the time she was extracted she was dead.

It seems that the overturn was caused by an issue with one of the lift’s outriggers, although that has yet to be confirmed. The machine was being used by a façade cleaning company - LeaL Técnicas Verticales. A lawyer for the deceased is seeking damage from the cleaning company and the shopping mall.
