Tower crane jib drop

A luffing jib tower crane dropped its jib yesterday on a project in Tottenham Hales, London, UK.

The crane, a Moritsch is, we understand, owned by the contractor Getjar, and was working on a McLaren site at Hale Wharf. The crane had received its Thorough examination/Inspection at the start of the week, shortly before the incident occurred. No one was hurt in the incident and no emergency services were called.

The jib failed while operating with no load on the hook. While we had been informed that the hook block had caught up on the building while slewing and hoisting causing an unsustainable side loading on the jib, McLaren has informed us that this version of events has not been established at all, and that a thorough investigation is ongoing. Once it is complete a full report will go to the Health & Safety Executive. The company has also told us that it will notify and update us if any significant facts emerge.

We will of course update this item when we receive any further information.
