New turbines for Queensland

Mammoet has installed 28 of the new Vestas EnVentus V162-5.6 MW wind turbines at Neoen's Kaban Green Power Hub in North Queensland, on the south side of Cairns. The turbines have a rotor diameter of 162 metres, mounted on towers with a hub height of 149 metres. Launched in 2020, they are the first of this type of turbine to be installed in Australia.

The lifting work was carried out using a nine axle 700 tonne Demag AC700 All Terrain crane with a five section 60 metre main boom and sideways superlift attachment for offloading and preassembly of components, while a 750 tonne Liebherr LG 1750SX lattice boom truck crane installed them. The crane was equipped with a 151 metres of main boom topped by a 12 metre fixed offset jib, to lift the 92 tonne nacelles into place on top of the towers.

Bjorn-Evert Van Eck Rasmussen of Mammoet Australia said: "The company's established presence in Australia, along with our fleet of equipment and expertise in onshore made us as the ideal partner for this project. Through our collaborative efforts with Neoen, Vestas and others involved in the project, we played a part in the transition to clean and green energy in the far North of Queensland."

Located in the Atherton Tablelands, Neoen's Kaban Green Power Hub is part of Queensland's aim to generate 50 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

Once complete the $373 million wind farm, is expected to generate enough clean energy to power up to 100,000 homes.
