Boom and bus

A bus collided with a boom lift in Midtown, Manhattan, New York on Monday night, causing minor injuries to a number of people.

The incident occurred around 48th Street and Madison Avenue alongside the site of a new building for Chase bank. We understand that the lift - a telescopic JLG boom - had unloaded and was driving into the site.

The site traffic crew had shut part of the road to allow the lift to travel onto site safely, but they claim the driver cut in to the closed lane prematurely and caught the boom platform/basket smashing several windows along the side of the bus. Several passengers suffered minor injuries as did the boom operator, who was fortunately harnessed in. He and the bus driver along with two passengers were taken to hospital for treatment.

The bus passengers blame the lift operator while the construction workers were clear that the fault lies with the bus driver. Thankfully all of the injuries sustained are minor compared to what might have been.

The following is a news item from the local ABC TV channel.
