Crane drops in

A three axle All Terrain crane broke through an upper floor of a supermarket car park in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday.

It seems that the driver of the Liebherr crane from the Phoenix crane rental fleet popped into the car park, possibly for some shopping? A statement from the supermarket said he was unauthorised and well over the stated maximum weight.

He may well have thought that he was entering the car lot on the ground floor, however there was at least one floor below the street level entrance, so what might have seemed like terra firma, was in fact an upper floor.

As he drove off the ramp onto the deck, he only managed a few metres before the concentration of his 30 to 36 tonnes gross weight on six tyres spread over a 2.5 by 4.7 metres space, caused the deck section to collapse into the floor below, complete with the crane, which ended up in its side.

One person was reported to have been slightly hurt in the incident, we assme that was the crane driver.
As a result of the incident the Publix supermarket has closed until further notice. One thing is for sure this could have been much much worse had the lower floor be crowded with shoppers and their cars.

But I don’t see sufficient reinforcement for the parking slab in the photo.

I’m surprised this has never happened in the UK be it in a similar situation or on a bridge. It never ceases to amaze me that the owners/drivers are so vague about the weights of all-terrain cranes. Almost definitely nearer to 36 tonnes ie 12 tonne per axle with no ballast. In the uk the same machine would weigh 46+ tonnes as we carry all the ballast.

He's got full ballast, so it's heavier. 14.5t per axle, so 43.5t by the book.
