Germany’s first LPS 600

Port operator Müller Weser has taken delivery of the first 208 tonne Liebherr LPS 600 rail mounted portal slewing crane in Germany.

The crane has been installed at the company’s terminal at the port of Brake on the Weser River south of Bremerhaven.

The LPS 600 features a 61 metre boom with a maximum radius of 58 metres with a capacity or almost 47.8 tonnes, while the maximum lift height is over 51 metres. Other features include a motorised grab control extra large cable drum, and electric drive with the ability to travel distances of up to 650 metres. The crane is also equipped with a curve-going chassis with various pivot points permitting travel on winding tracks. Total weight is 540 tonnes.

The port has transhipment areas, warehouses and silos along a 2.5 kilometre quay with seven berths for large ships. Each year it handles 1,924 ships and 7.1 million tonnes of goods including a wide range of bulk goods and dry bulk that are handled in large quantities at the port. Under ideal conditions, up to 1,000 tonnes of dry bulk per hour. The crane can also be used to handle unitised cargo such as pulp, timber, steel, wind turbines and project cargo. The crane’s reach also allows direct ship to ship handling.

Family owned J. Müller was founded in 1821 and operates its own terminals in Brake and Bremen for the transhipment and seaport logistics of dry bulk and breakbulk of various sizes. The company has the largest continuous silo facility in Europe and can unload 20,000 tonnes of agricultural goods every day.

Managing director Jens Ripken said: “Our investment in the LPS 600 will significantly improve our handling performance for dry bulk materials such as grain, feed, scrap, minerals, and for general cargo such as iron and steel, project cargo, wind turbines, wood, and pulp. The aim is to ensure smoother and more efficient operation and ultimately to increase throughput. We are confident that this crane will not only meet our current requirements but will also support our future growth and expansion plans while meeting our sustainability goals. Liebherr’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction is evident in every aspect of this project.”
