First LR 1700-1.0W for Mexico

Mexican crane and heavy haulage company ESEASA has taken delivery of a new 700 tonne Liebherr LR 1700-1.0W narrow track crawler crane. The first unit of this type to arrive in central or south America.

ESEASA ordered the new crawler crane at Conexpo last year as part of a package that included four other Liebherr cranes - a 250 tonne LTM 1250-5.1 All Terrain, a 150 tonne LTM 1150-5.3 All Terrain and two 90 tonne LRT 1090-2.1 Rough Terrains.

The LR 1700-1.0W is the successor to the 600 tonne LR 1600/2-W and is currently said to be the most powerful narrow track crawler crane on the market. It was launched last April - (Click here for launch report and technical description) the new crane offers significantly higher lift capacities and versatility, thanks to a high level of compatibility with the regular LR 1700-1. It is though slightly wider - 100mm - than the LR 1600 with a retracted overall width at 5.9 metres.

The narrow track model uses the same boom and jib configuration as the standard LR 1700-1crawler crane and when rigged with the luffing jib has a lift height of 198 metres allowing it to handle turbines with hub heights of 170 metres. The VarioTray ballast system and V-frame are available with a ballast radius of 13 to 21 metres.

ESEASA ordered the new crane with the standard wide travel gear/chassis, allowing it to be easily converted to a regular LR 1700-1. The company has a backlog of wind turbine work, and has secured a contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of offshore platforms and six oil drilling platforms, all of which will keep the new cranes busy.

Company co-owner Aldo Santos said: "We opted for the LR 1700-1.0W because it is significantly more powerful than its predecessor. It also offers state of the art crawler crane technology. Liebherr offers innovative and safe crane technology and retain their value exceptionally well, with a high resale value."

Eseasa is based in Mexico city with an additional 148 acre (60 hectare) yard in Tampicos. It employs around 1,500 staff, running a fleet of 300 cranes topped out by 3,000 tonne Liebherr LR 13000 crawler, while its largest telescopic in its fleet is the 1,200 tonne LTM 11200-9.1 All Terrain. The company predominately works in the energy sector - both wind power and oil - while offering engineering and logistics services for major projects in central America and the USA.
