Crane fatality in Cartagena

A tower crane collapsed on a job site, while it was being dismantled on a building site in Cartagena, Columbia, on Sunday resulting in a fatality, while two others were injured.

The original report from the Cartagena Fire Department said that three men working on the site had been taken to hospital with injuries, one of them with a serious head injury who was rescued from underneath the jib, while another was trapped on the tower. He was rescued shortly after the emergency services arrived, however the man with the head injury, Nilson Alberto Dávila Soraca, 31, died later in hospital, the other two were said to be in a stable condition.

The crane had been used on the 21 storey residential tower building and been climbed down to the halfway point, when something went wrong and the entire top including the cab and back mast fell to the ground.
