Fatal boom lift overturn in Gaza
Two Israeli soldiers died yesterday when a boom lift used as an observation platform overturned onto their tent - although some reports claim it was a building. Eight others were injured, one of them seriously. The two that died are reserve soldier Nadav Cohen, 21and staff sergeant Nachman Refael Ben Ami, 20.
Reports claim the platform - a well used boom lift - was extended and loaded with a fair bit of monitoring kit. Wind speeds are said to have reached 17 metres a second - over 60kph/38mph - overnight, and possibly gusted higher than that. 12.5 metres a second is considered the maximum wind speed for aerial lifts.
The incident occurred in a new buffer zone close to a crossing point into Israel.
We have received a photograph, but we have not been able to verify its authenticity. Most reports describe it as a crane which is all too common in the mass media.
If we receive any more information we will update this item, in the meantime beware strong winds.
