Crane takes a plunge

A large shipbuilding crane suddenly toppled into the water yesterday, the operator, who is employed by BAE Systems, was rescued by a tugboat and returned to work after being taken to hopsital for a check up.

The crane lying in the water

Pier 70 is where the late 19th century Union Iron Works began which later evolved into the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard. The oldest continuously operating shipyard on the West Coast it has been in use for some form of shipbuilding or ship repair for over 150 years.

The crane is one of two old cranes that operate on the dry dock that have become a landmark for the area, they are operated by BAE Systems. No explanation for what caused the crane to tip has been given it is reported that it was not lifting at the time.

An light oil slick was visible around the crane wreck, modt likely from its gear boxes, the environmental agency is investigating. California Osha has also sent in a team to investigate the cause of the accident.
