Axle failure sends crane off road

The failure of a front stub axle on a truck crane sent it careering accross the opposite lane of US Highway 24 near Bloomington, Illinois, crashing into a large truck.

The accident happened yesterday just west of Chatsworth and injured both drivers while spilling fuel over the road surface.

The crane rolled after leaving the highway

A crane owned by R.R. Hafley Crane Service of Bloomington, which is south west of Chicago, was travelling westbound on U.S. 24 when the right front stub axle is reported to have broken according to the local police.

The crane veered into the eastbound lane and collided with the front of the truck.

The truck spilled its fuel

The truck’s fuel tank ruptured, spilling around 80 litres or more of diesel fuel onto the road. The crane driver was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, and the truck driver was taken to OSF St. James-John W. Albrecht Medical Center in Pontiac.
